Sweet Shoppe Birthday Party

10 Oct

Well, thank god THAT’S over!  Threw my daughter’s 8th birthday bash this past weekend and I am flat busted worn OWT.  It turned out cute though.  There were like 30 kids running amok, all hopped up on sugar, throwing glitter, coloring on walls.  The day after THIS party, my kid was picked up in a limo and taken to another kid’s birthday party.  Remember when you wore a party dress, played pin the booty on the donkey and sipped juice with 5 of your mother-approved friends?  Yeah, well those days are over.  O-V-E-R.

I Love Cookies!

29 Aug

I don’t always make cookies.  But when I do, I always use the Mrs. Fields sugar cookie recipe.  It’s the most awesome dough of all time.  You can find the recipe here.  The trick is to barely bake them.  The second the bottoms start to turn golden, get them out of there.  Even if they look “raw”…they firm up after cooling down.  Same goes for the oatmeal cookie recipe below.  Here are some of my sinful indulgences:

Now.  Here is the best oatmeal cookie recipe EVER.  I’m not sure where I got the recipe, but here it is.  Also, these will help you go to the bathroom:

Oatmeal Cookies

*  2 cups all-purpose flour

*  1/2 tsp. baking powder

*  1 tsp. baking soda

*  1/2 tsp. salt

*  1/2 cup butter

*  1/2 cup vegetable oil

*  1 cup packed brown sugar

*  1 cup white sugar

*  2 eggs

*  3-4 cups quick cooking oats (dough will be thick)

1)  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2)  Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

3)  In medium bowl, cream the butter, oil, brown sugar and white sugar until smooth.  Beat in eggs.

4)  Gradually stir in sifted ingredients until well blended.  Mix in oats.  (An electric mixer makes this MUCH easier).

5)  Use small cookie dough scoop.  Bake 5-7 minutes.

6)  Immediately after removing from oven, lightly pat down the top of cookie with the back of a fork.  This gives that “bakery” look.

Marshmallow Mania

20 Aug

My current obsession?  Marshmallows.  Seriously.  I’m afflicted.  So much so, in fact, that I’m subjecting my willing readers to gaze upon that which I so deeply desire.

Lunch Bag Countdown: 1 Day to Go!

16 May

One more day left of school!  I’m totally not ready for summer break.  At all.

Countdown to Summer

10 May

We’ve got five more days of school before the debauchery begins.  I pretty much let my kid run amok in her underpants all summer.  Don’t judge me.  So throughout the year I’ve been drawing stupid stuff on her lunch bag.  I’m not sure how it started but I began drawing pictures with the number of days left of school.  You’ll note that I began with 28.  The unofficial number of days spent in your average rehab facility.  Totally unintentional. Anyway, here they are.  I’ve decided that next year?  I’m doing one everyday.  Countdown from the very first day of school.  You know, to give her hope and whatnot.

(These aren’t in order.  So don’t bother mentioning it.”

Mama Loca

13 Aug

I love Amy Locurto.  She’s one of those self-proclaimed “fun moms who doesn’t worry about the dishes piling up.”  Her website, Living Locurto, has all kinds of yummy freebies, printables, tips and treats for the aspiring Perfect Mother.  Today’s fun and fabulous freebie was a set of whimsical morning routine reminder cards to gently help your child learn the skills that will one day lead to a successfully independent lifestyle.  Here they are:  (You can click on image to visit Amy’s site and print these out for yourself.)

I have morning routine cards for my kid too.  Only they look like THIS:

You may be saying to yourself, “Well, how crass and rude!”  Really?

The Art of the Costume

30 Oct

Remember those nasty little plastic masks we had to wear as kids….with the rubber band that would knot your hair all up in the back?  Remember trying to stick your tongue out the mouth-hole and cutting it to pieces on the raggedy plastic?  And then the build up of facial sweat would become unbearable and you’d have to slide it up over your head and breathe like you needed air to live.  Yeah.  Those were the days.

So when my daughter was born, I decided then and there that I would be making her costume every single year until she could physically beat me up.  Every year around August, we’ll sit down and look at tons of patterns and she’ll pick something out.  Always some weird strain of fairy.  This year?  Watermelon fairy.  But not JUST a watermelon fairy.  A watermelon fairy throwing a peace sign!

Another Year Down

25 Sep

Cali turned 6 last week.  We opted for a quiet ‘n private party this year and promised a big bash next year.  I figured if I pumped her full of cake and sprinkles, she wouldn’t fight me on it.  I was right.  But don’t you think for a second that it’s going to be this small and quiet next year!  I’m thinking Cirque du Soleil!
